Well-known Cold Ash resident Jack Smith died on 21st November 2006, at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading aged 86, following several weeks of illness. A delightful and enthusiastic man, he will be remembered with great affection by many people. He retired to Cold Ash following a distinguished career as a senior manager with British Rail, and later with the US Department of Transportation and Amtrak. During this professional life Jack worked on many aspects of the rail industry. He was project manager for the introduction of high speed trains to the BR system in the 1970s, which are still running today. His reputation as a rail expert was recognised internationally, particularly by American and French rail authorities, and he was invited to re-organise and re-equip the Boston/New York/Washington rail system, followed by a similar project in Alaska. He was also deputy director of a consortium with French railways to build a channel tunnel, which preceded the later scheme that won final approval. In addition to all this he was an advised to the World Bank. In retirement, Jack was a keen member of the Newbury Society, advising on many and varied transport problems, and he will be sorely missed by members and the committee. Jack was realist about the relative merits of road and rail travel. A life-long devotee of Rover cards, he enjoyed driving, especially to France, and he argued strongly in favour of the Newbury by-pass. Until a few years ago he still enjoyed skiing. He was a very keen gardener and a governor of Turnpike School. A devoted family man, Jack’s passing is a great loss to his widow Doris, his daughters Elizabeth and Vivien, and his grandchildren Douglas, Xinru and Qing Qing. The funeral will be held at noon on Monday, 4th December 2006 at St Mark’s Church, Cold Ash. MJ |
